NEW CASTLE — An Ohio man was injured in a fall at McConnell’s Mill State Park Monday afternoon.

Cody Captain, 26, of Struthers, was visiting the park with a cousin, Sean Robertson, and taking photos at Kildoo Falls when he fell about 15 to 20 feet.

According to Jake Weiland, assistant park manager, the man was not on a designated scenic spot when the accident occurred. He stressed the public is advised to stay on approved trails and scenic observation spots when visiting dangerous areas of the park.

In the past, the popular McConnell’s Mill has been the source of several serious and sometimes fatal accidents. Its deep ravines, rocky geography and the rapidly moving Slippery Rock Creek make for spectacular — and sometimes dangerous — viewing.

Weiland said park personnel responded to the fall, as did members of the Slippery Rock, Shenango and Portersville volunteer fire departments. Also assisting were state police and Portersville Emergency Medical Services.

Captain was taken by helicopter to a hospital, but Weiland said he was not sure which one.

He noted such treatment of injured individuals is standard at the park. Weiland said that at the scene, the man was standing on his own and speaking with rescuers.
