Fire’s cause undetermined

NEW CASTLE — The cause of a fire at a vacant house on Richlieu Avenue remains undertermined.

And now police have a report of a burglary at the building.

Firefighters received a call at 7 a.m. Monday of heavy smoke emanating from the attic area of the house at 206 Richlieu Ave.

They were able to confine the fire to the second-floor hallway and a bedroom.

The front door of the house was locked and there was no indication of any break-in. The city’s fire investigator, patrolman David Viggiano, was called to the scene.

The fire department said the owner of the house is listed as Duane M. Koontz, who is deceased.

A man who has power of attorney for the owner reported he had gone to the house around 5 p.m. the afternoon after the fire and found that copper piping had been stolen from the basement.

New Castle police said the doors of the house had been forced open by firefighters during the blaze.
