Car fire damages carport, house

NEW CASTLE — A fire that began in a car engine caused an estimated $55,000 to an East Side house and carport.

The New Castle fire department was called about 6 p.m. Sunday to the home of Donald and Dolores Petrovitch at 928 Clarence Ave. They remained for about two hours.

Firefighters said they were told the car, which had recently undergone service for a transmission problem, was parked in the carport, attached to the building. They said a fire began in the vehicle’s engine compartment, spread to the carport then jumped to the roof of the house.

The firefighters were told the car had been in the carport for at least an hour — untouched — before the blaze was noticed.

Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the building, $5,000 to the contents and $30,000 to the vehicle.
