NEW CASTLE — New Castle police are looking for two men who were in a stolen car that crashed off Halco Drive.

The pair got out of the red Ford Taurus and ran, according to police.

An officer on patrol around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday reported seeing the car back out from a gated entrance to the former Shenango China property off Grant Street. The car turned onto Halco Drive without using a turn signal, going more than 35 mph, and the officer followed it through the housing project, according to police.

The officer noted people were standing outside and the car turned onto Green Street without its signal and he tried to pull it over.

The passenger side door opened while the Taurus was still moving, and both the driver and front-seat passenger got out and ran. The still-moving car then hit an embankment in front of a church.

Police enlisted the help of a canine officer to look for the men but did not find them. They noted damage to the Taurus but not to the church or property.

The car was impounded and police contacted the car owner and learned it had been stolen around 8:20 p.m. from the 500 block of Pearson Street.

New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said the department has possible suspects but no charges have been filed yet.
