Child porn charges filed against optometrist

NEW CASTLE — A Slippery Rock man with a New Castle optometry practice has been charged with receiving and possessing child pornography.

According to court records, Mark Beres, 53, of 445 Center St., also admitted to engaging in sexual contact with three boys.

The U.S. Attorney’s office believes there may be more victims and seeks the public’s help to identify them.

According to court records, in October 2010, U.S. postal inspectors began an investigation of a foreign movie production company that operated a website selling DVDs and films marked as “naturist films.”

The investigation determined that between January 2006 and April 2011, Beres allegedly had ordered $2,716 worth of child pornography from the company’s website shipped to his home from a North Tonawanda, N.Y.-based firm called the International Co.

That company is being prosecuted outside the United States for child exploitation offenses, including producing and distributing child pornography.

A search of Beres’ house and computer led investigators to find 500,000 images and 550 videos of naked children, including some of children involved in sex acts.

According to court records, Beres — who worked as an optometrist at the New Castle Sears — provided a written statement to investigators. In it, Beres admitted more than 10,000 images of child pornography could be found on his computer, the court documents noted. He also admitted to having sex with three boys — ages 3, 7 and 13 — on at least 30 occasions, the records note, and to photographing them “naked, for his own sexual gratification.”

By order of U.S. Magistrate Judge Cynthia Eddy, Beres is detained pending trial.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection service at (412) 490-6513.
