Union man arrested after police standoff

NEW CASTLE — A Union Township man is facing multiple charges after a police standoff at his home early Wednesday.

Officers said Brian S. Miles, 42, threatened to shoot them, as well as himself, during the incident at 3927 W. Washington St.

However, they said, Miles was taken into custody peacefully, after about an hour, while officers had surrounded his home.

A criminal complaint filed against Miles alleges he had threatened officers and even pointed a handgun at several of them during the standoff.

Union Township police said they received a call about the incident shortly after 12 a.m. when family members contacted 911. They told police Miles had ordered them and the family’s dogs out of the house, saying he was going to shoot himself.

Police were told that at one point, Miles put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but it jammed. He then allegedly got a different gun and fired several shots into the ceiling of the house and into the air outside.

Along with officers from Union, state police and law enforcement from New Castle, Neshannock Township and Pulaski Township responded and set up a perimeter around the home. Efforts to talk Miles into leaving the house were unsuccessful, police said, until around 1:20 a.m., when he walked out unarmed and was taken into custody.

Once inside the house, police said, they located five handguns, including one that had jammed and another that was cocked and had a round in the chamber.

After he was arrested, Miles was taken to Jameson Hospital for a mental health evaluation. Upon release, he is to be arraigned on 18 charges. They are three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, five counts of making terroristic threats, five counts of recklessly endangering another person, one count of resisting arrest and two counts of simple assault.
