Police investigating South Side shooting death

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police said they found Robert Quincy Brown’s body lying near his van on the city’s South Side Thursday.

When officers arrived shortly after 2 a.m., the 35-year-old was on the ground with a bullet wound to the head, according to Chief Bobby Salem.

“His death is being investigated as a homicide,” Salem said, adding there are no suspects yet.

Brown, of 1121 Sciota St., was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m. by Lawrence County deputy coroner Rich Johnson, who said an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday at the Heritage Valley Health System in Beaver County.

Brown’s death marks the first homicide in the city in more than a year.

Salem said officers had been called to Sciota Street around 2 a.m. regarding a suspicious vehicle. They found the van — running and with its lights on — behind Lutton’s Garage and Brown lying in a small field nearby, he said.

Lawrence County District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa, who went to the scene Thursday, said Brown had been shot at close range, straight-on in the forehead with a large-caliber weapon.

Salem said no other information is being released, pending further investigation.

Anyone who has information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the New Castle police detective bureau at (724) 656-3585, or use the online tip line at

Salem said Brown is from New Castle and has family in the area.

According to court records, at the time of his death Brown was wanted on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court Jan. 8 for a call of trial. He was facing charges for gun violations and for allegedly having possession of a stolen gun. The charges stemmed from a June 7 incident when he was accused of having fired multiple gunshots in the Sciota Street area. At the time, police said the gun had been reported stolen from Neshannock Township.

As Pennsylvania’s tax revenues from casinos plateau, some are saying Internet gambling should be legalized in the state. Do you agree?

Yes. If people are willing to spend money, I’m all for our state collecting additional taxes.
No. We’re already seeing casino tax revenue dropping. This would just saturate the market even further.
