Mahoningtown fire called suspicious

NEW CASTLE — Firefighters labeled a blaze at a vacant house in Mahoningtown early Sunday as suspicious.

The New Castle Fire Department was called to 108 E. Clayton St. around 2:40 a.m. after a passerby saw flames at the house. The witness called 911.

When firefighters arrived, they found a blaze that apparently had started on a back porch and had spread to a door that had burned off. However, they were able to quickly extinguish the fire. They then used a pressure fan to clear smoke from the structure.

Firefighters remained at the scene until about 3:30 a.m. Damage from the fire was estimated at $10,000.

The owner of the house was listed as Asset Management Specialists.

New Castle police were contacted to investigate the cause of the fire.
