Man accused of punching, choking woman

NEW CASTLE — An East Side man is being held on $20,000 bond after police charged him with aggravated assault.

Shawn M. Book, 37, of 910 Rose Ave. is accused of punching and choking a woman at his home over the weekend.

According to police, the victim told officers the attacks occurred Saturday and Sunday. She said that on Saturday, Book choked her until she nearly passed out, adding she was hit on the head multiple times.

Police said they observed injuries on the victim consistent with her description.

On Sunday, the victim told police Book again attacked her by sitting on her stomach, pinning her to the ground and punching her about a dozen times. Police said she had a black eye and scratches on her arms and legs from the assault.

Book was arrested by police Sunday evening after he was seen driving in downtown New Castle.

Along with aggravated assault, he is charged with unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and harassment.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 8.
