Two charged in purse theft

NEW CASTLE — Two people face charges for allegedly using checks and credit cards from a stolen purse.

Vanessa L. Snow, 25, of Apt. 2, 307 Highland Ave., was charged Wednesday in District Judge Melissa A. Amodie’s court with forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

Jason Alan Burkett, 28, of the same address, also was charged Wednesday with forgery, theft by deception, receiving stolen property, conspiracy to commit forgery, access device fraud, and attempt to commit access device fraud.

Both were lodged in the county jail on $2,500 bond each. They are to be arraigned Wednesday.

According to police, Snow admitted to being with a female acquaintance when the woman stole a purse from a North Mercer Street front porch about 5 p.m. June 10. Snow said they had been walking past the home and her friend took the purse after the resident had gone into her backyard, according to police.

Snow said she, her friend, Burkett and another man then took credit cards and checks from the purse. Snow cashed three checks for a total of $444.69 and unsuccessfully tried to cash another.

Burkett told police he and another man took a credit card from the purse and used it to buy $109 in merchandise at a gas station, then used two cartons of cigarettes purchased there to buy drugs.

He used the card to buy a pack of cigarettes at another gas station, according to police, then tried to make a purchase at a drugstore, where the card was declined.
