Man wanted for robbery flees police

NEW CASTLE — A man wanted on a felony warrant for robbery reportedly fled police when they caught up with him.

New Castle police said George Maynard Stevenish, 24, of 326 Cuba St., remains at large and now has an additional charge against him of flight to avoid apprehension. He previously was wanted on three active bench warrants from the Lawrence County Common Pleas Court, and now a fourth warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Police said they spotted Stevenish in front of his apartment around 9 a.m. Thursday while driving on Cuba Street. Stevenish saw the police cruiser and turned toward his front door, police said, and when an officer yelled his name, he ran into his apartment. Officers surrounded his building and entered the apartment to try to arrest him, but he had run out the back door seconds before the perimeter was established, according to police.

Last year, Stevenish allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint on Park Avenue and stole $310 from him, police said. He is accused of hitting the man in the face after the man gave him the cash from his pocket.

Anyone who has information on Stevenish’s whereabouts is asked to contact the New Castle Police Department at (724) 656-3576, or offer a tip through its Facebook tip line.
