NEW CASTLE —
An 11-year-old could be facing criminal charges after taking an unloaded pellet gun to school.
New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said officers were called to George Washington Intermediate Elementary School about 3 p.m. Thursday.
Salem said the fifth-grader had an unloaded, Airsoft pellet gun in his backpack. Salem said the boy told another student he had the gun. That student told a teacher, who took the boy and gun to building principal Joseph Anderson.
“It is up to the school if the student is to be dismissed,” Salem said.
However, he noted, police are considering the possibility of filing criminal charges because the student allegedly threatened another child with the gun.
“The school has a no-tolerance police when it comes to weapons and guns,” Salem said.
But the student who took the pellet gun to school never removed it from his backpack, the chief noted, and it was not loaded.
Salem said the gun is “less powerful than a bb gun, but if someone shot at someone, he could shoot his eye out, just like with a bb gun.”

East Side garage ‘total loss’ in fire
The New Castle police department fire investigator was called for a blaze at a garage. The three-bay garage at 626 Superior St. was a total loss, according to New Castle firefighters, who were called about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday. They remained at the scene until nearly 3 a.m.

New Castle police have arrested a South Side man for his alleged role in a convenience store burglary. Alex John Benkosky, 21, of 821 S. Mercer St., is accused as an accomplice in the March 26 break-in at the Country Fair on Croton Avenue.

Man accused of cutting woman
A New Castle man is accused of allegedly assaulting a Crestview Gardens woman. Police said Dajoi Taylor, 19, of 509 W. North St. allegedly hit an 18-year-old woman in the cheek with a purple eyebrow razor and pulled the weave out of her hair during an encounter around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Vacant house burns on South Side
A vacant South Side house burned Monday morning. New Castle firefighters were called at 12:50 a.m. to 510 Galbreath St. They said the structure “was fully involved” when they arrived and flames could be seen on all four sides of the building.

A Detroit man reported to New Castle police he had been pistol whipped by two men in Crestview Gardens. The man told police the incident occurred around 3 p.m. Wednesday on Parkwood Court.

Cleaners cause fire in vacant Halco unit
Lawrence County Housing Authority employees cleaning a vacant unit sparked a blaze Monday, according to city firefighters. The fire just before noon in the Halco Drive apartment caused $10,000 damage to the kitchen, they said.
