Teen’s death in crash attributed to drowning

NEW CASTLE — A preliminary ruling in the death of a teen in a traffic accident indicates he died by drowning.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office issued a press release in connection with its investigation into the death of Shane McQuiston, 15, of Edinburg, who was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed along Valley View Road in Pulaski Township Friday night.

The truck went off the road and landed on its roof in Deer Run. Rescuers worked to free McQuiston and the driver, 17-year-old Ethan Seeber.

According to Dr. Joseph S. Ohr, deputy coroner, McQuiston’s death officially remains under investigation, pending toxicology results. However, he said that preliminary investigations — including police reports and the autopsy — show no sign drugs or alcohol were involved in McQuiston’s death.

Ohr noted police did not find alcohol or any other intoxicating substances at the scene of the accident.

He added that McQuiston had sustained no internal injuries from the crash, but had been restrained by a seat belt and shoulder harness and had to be cut out of the truck by emergency personnel.
