•Driving under the influence. Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by James J. Beeker, 40 of 419 Clen-Moore Blvd. at 11:45 p.m. Dec. 17 on East Washington Street near Cascade Street. They said it was determined he was under the influence and he was arrested. A subsequent test determined Beeker’s blood alcohol count was 0.235 percent, or nearly three times the legal limit.
•Retail theft. Melissa Ann Jones, 31, of 2452 Harlansburg Road and Charley Weir, 29, of 1147 Pin Oak Drive were charged with retail theft in connection with an incident at Giant Eagle on New Butler Road at 4:50 p.m. Dec. 22. They allegedly took merchandise — mainly DVDs and candy — valued at nearly $250.
•Driving under the influence. Police said they stopped a vehicle for violations on State Road near Old Princeton Road at 12:40 a.m. Dec. 23. They said they determined the driver, Lenny J. Staples, 45, of 3582 Copper Road was under the influence of alcohol. Officers said testing revealed his blood-alcohol count was 0.101 percent.

Man facing drug charges
Charges filed against a city man stem from a July arrest, when police allegedly found him with marijuana. Dorian Allen Cullen, 31, of 209 E. Pearson St., is wanted for one count each of disorderly conduct, public drunkenness, criminal trespass, manufacture of a controlled substance and possession or distribution of a small amount of marijuana, and four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Stabbing victims out of hospital, charges pending
A father and son stabbed on the South Side last week are out of the hospital. New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said the men are being interviewed and he expects charges to be filed later in the week.
Pair assists woman in escape from smoky bedroom
A woman was rescued Friday evening after reporting smoke in her mobile home. Cindy Zarlingo of 275 Dominick Lane, Mahoning Township, called 911 at 8:54 p.m. stating there was smoke in her bedroom and she was unable to get out.
Police identify victims in fatal Amish buggy crash
State police say a mother and her daughter died in a fatal collision between a truck and a horse-drawn Amish buggy. Authorities say 34-year-old Mary Byler, of New Wilmington, and her 11-year-old daughter, whose name was withheld, died in the crash Saturday on Pulaski-Mercer Road, Wilmington Township, Mercer County.
Father, son stabbed during argument
A father and son were stabbed during an argument Wednesday afternoon on New Castle’s South Side. Police Chief Robert Salem said in a press release that during an argument at 528 E. Long Ave. Joseph Bohizic stabbed his son Terry Kohlmetz in the buttocks area.
Girl hurt as vehicle slides
A 7-year-old girl suffered what police described as major injuries when she was hit by a car Tuesday. Kristina Ritenour of New Castle was injured in the accident just after 4 p.m. Tuesday on Columbiana Road in North Beaver Township.
City man facing drug charges
New Castle police charged Steven Kornard Houston, 21, 509 E. Lutton St., with possession and delivery of a controlled substance. Police filed the charges with District Judge Melissa A. Amodie.
Police gearing up for Shop With a Cop
Police in Lawrence County are getting ready to go Christmas shopping. They’re not buying for themselves. They are using thousands of dollars collected from the community to take lesser fortunate children on their annual “Shop With a Cop” spree at Walmart in Union Township.
Double stabbing on South Side
New Castle police were responding to a double stabbing on the South Side Wednesday afternoon. Few details were available, but the stabbings occurred at a home in the 500 block of East Long Avenue.
