Dog dies in blaze as firefighters battle intense heat

NEW CASTLE — Firefighters battled heat as well as flames Thursday in responding to a fire at a home in Union Township.

A dog was reported killed in the fire at 47 Upper Idlewild Drive.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which occurred in the midst of a heat wave. Late morning temperatures were well into the 80s, challenging firefighters wearing bulky equipment.
