NEW CASTLE —
A passerby may have saved the life of a Perry Township woman whose home was hit by a fire Monday.
According to the Wurtemburg-Perry Volunteer Fire Department, someone spotted smoking comiing from the mobile home of Grace Bosely at 404 Palo Alto Drive, warned her and notified the department.
The fire broke out around 8:10 p.m. Members of the Wurtemburg-Perry department responded, as did firefighters from Wayne and Franklin townships and Ellwood City. According to Brian Partridge, Wurtemburg-Perry’s assistant chief, about 30 firefighters were on the scene.
The Chewton department was on standby.
Partridge said firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the roof area of the trailer, but it spread throughout the void between the roof and ceiling of the mobile home. As a result, the mobile home was totaled by the fire.
Firefighters were on the scene for about 90 minutes, Partridge said. One firefighter suffered a small cut fighting the blaze, he noted, but was treated at the scene by emergency personnel.
Officially, the cause of the fire still was undetermined Tuesday, but Partridge and Chief Mark McDevitt said it appeared to have started in the furnace and chimney area of the mobile home.
