Man accused in robbery attempt

NEW CASTLE — A Mahoningtown man is wanted in connection with an attempted robbery on the city’s South Side.

New Castle police have charged Scott Matthew Haley, 31, of 405 W. Cherry St. in connection with the offense after he was picked out of a photo lineup.

The victim told police he had been sitting on his porch on Grimes Street around 7:45 p.m. Sunday and a man named Scott visited him, saying the man owed him money. He responded he didn’t owe him money, but the man reached for his pocket and tore his pants, he told police.

The man also told officers his attacker had grabbed him around the neck and tried to choke him, adding he had trouble breathing while the man searched his pockets. He said he broke free and ran before the man could take anything from him.

He called the police from a local business, he added.

Police said Haley is charged with criminal attempt at robbery, criminal attempt at theft, criminal attempt at receiving stolen property, simple assault and harassment.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed “unprecedented” legislation yesterday to expand gun rights in his state. Good idea?

Yes. Expanding the scope of where people can carry guns can help halt violent crimes and make those places safer.
No. Carrying guns into bars and schools is NEVER a good idea. I think it will lead to more violence.
Not sure, but I don’t plan to visit Georgia any time soon.
