Police arrest woman on North Hill

NEW CASTLE — A Moody Avenue woman has been charged following vehicle break-ins on the city’s North Hill.

Police said most of the items reported missing have been recovered.

New Castle police charged Kaley Merk, 28, of 221 E. Moody Ave. with two counts of receiving stolen property. She remains in the Lawrence County jail on two $2,500 bonds.

Officers were called Saturday to the 1500 block of Blaine Street by residents who said their cars and a garage had been broken into, and that someone was seen taking bicycles from the garage. They reported that change and a GPS were taken from their cars. Police said the bicycles were found behind the garage.

Officers said they also recovered a silver ashtray, change, a battery and battery charagers, sunglasses, a phone charger, a GPS, a cigar, a black and gray lunchbox and other items.

    A Taylor Township man who allegedly doused his home with gasoline faces multiple charges of arson and assault. Jason P. Merlini, 39, of 309 Warner Alley was charged with six counts of arson, five counts of aggravated assault including one for domestic violence, one count of reckless burning and five counts of recklessly endangering another person.

    The state fire marshal has determined a blaze at the Overlook Health and Rehabilitation Center was caused by carelessness. Trooper David Jungling issued his report Friday and said the blaze was determined to have been caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.

  • Police called to Halco Drive disturbance

    An apparently intoxicated Halco Drive man drew a crowd Thursday night. New Castle police were called about 6:30 p.m. and found a 19-year-old man cutting his face and head with the razor blade of a utility knife.

    Police have charged four people arrested during a drug raid Wednesday in Union Township. Members of the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force executed a sealed search warrant at 27 Spring St. All four suspects live at that address, according to court records.

    A New Castle man who hit a tree in Pulaski Township has been admitted to St. Elizabeth Health Center. According to Pulaski Township police, Adam Welsh, 36, of 202 E. Fairmont Ave., was eastbound on Route 422 about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when his pickup truck left the road.

  • East Side garage ‘total loss’ in fire

    The New Castle police department fire investigator was called for a blaze at a garage. The three-bay garage at 626 Superior St. was a total loss, according to New Castle firefighters, who were called about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday. They remained at the scene until nearly 3 a.m.

  • Shenango man accused of breaking into car

    A Shenango man was arrested after he allegedly was caught breaking into a car on New Castle’s East Side. New Castle police charged Jessie Lauderbaugh, 23, of Highview Drive with fleeing from police, theft from a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct and loitering and prowling at night.
