NEW CASTLE —
Update, 11:30 a.m. — Four police officers are on administrative leave after shooting a 43-year-old Mahoningtown man in a standoff early today.
New Castle police chief Bobby Salem said he turned the investigation over to the state police at his own request because city police officers were involved in the incident. The officers are on leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“My officers did a good job,” Salem said Friday morning. He would not provide any other details, deferring to the state police.
Meanwhile, Ivy J. Lanthier is listed as critical at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. State police would not say how many times or where on his body Lanthier was shot.
Reports say he held a 23-year-old man at gunpoint inside his home at 1 Montgomery Avenue late Thursday night and ordered his family members to leave.
Police said that Lanthier took a shotgun and a handgun into the bedroom where his 22-year-old daughter and her 29-year-old boyfriend were, around 9:30 p.m.
All three live at the residence, in addition to Lanthier’s 48-year-old wife.
Police learned that Lanthier shot both guns into the ceiling, then told all of the females to leave and ordered the boyfriend to stay.
One of the women called 911 and reported the incident, then left the house, according to police.
When New Castle officers arrived, they set up a perimeter around the house around 12:15 a.m., and a city officer contacted Lanthier by phone, state police reported. Then Lanthier emerged from the house still carrying the shotgun and pistol.
Police said he fired at least three rounds from the handgun and police returned fire and wounded him at least two times.
Lanthier was taken to Jameson Hospital, then flown to the trauma center of St. Elizabeth Health Center.
No police officers or bystanders were injured.
Police said charges against Lanthier are pending.
Update, 8:40 a.m. — A 43-year-old New Castle man was injured by police gunfire overnight after a standoff in Mahoningtown.
State police have reported that Ivy Lanthier held a 23-year-old man at gunpoint inside his Montgomery Avenue home around 12:15 a.m. today and ordered everyone else to leave. A woman in the house called 911 and reported the incident, then left the house.
When New Castle police arrived at the scene, Lanthier emerged from the house with a shotgun and a pistol, state police reported.
He shot at least three rounds from the handgun and police returned fire and wounded him, according to a state police account.
Lanthier was taken to the trauma center of St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he is in critical condition this morning, according to police.
Update, 7:55 a.m. — Details remain sketchy at this point, but The News has learned that a man was shot during an overnight standoff with New Castle Police.
The incident occurred in Mahoningtown, and as of 6:30 a.m. today blockades on Liberty Street and Route 18 prevented traffic from entering.
Reports on the condition of the man are conflicting, but he was apparently taken by Life Flight helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. Witnesses said the man was waving a gun at police officers when he was shot.
