Another arrest made in marijuana plane case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Another arrest has been announced in the case of a marijuana-loaded airplane that was stopped in Lawrence County.

A Tiverton, R.I., man faces a federal drug charge after authorities said they found $1.2 million worth of marijuana on an airplane headed from Pennsylvania to Smithfield.

The Providence Journal reported Thursday Michael Daniels was arrested after allegedly receiving drugs from the plane’s pilot. Daniels is accused of conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to distribute.

Authorities found 242 pounds of marijuana on a plane at the New Castle Airport last week. Pilot Ken Barton Burrows, of Utah, was arrested after federal authorities monitored his cross-country trip. He was allowed to continue on to Rhode Island Monday.

Court papers filed in Providence say the pilot met Daniels behind a Lincoln hotel, where Daniels allegedly received the drugs.

It wasn’t immediately known if Daniels has an attorney.
