Businessman helps police recover jewelry

NEW CASTLE — A local businessman helped New Castle police recover jewelry believed to have been taken in a burglary.

Christopher Caravella, 26, of 306 Nutt St., was arrested and charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and one count of theft by deception.

He was arraigned before District Judge Melissa Amodie and remains jailed on a $10,000 bond.

Police were notified after Caravella approached a businessman to pawn several thousand dollars worth of gold and silver jewelry — and accepted only $60 for the merchandise.

Police said they believe the jewelry was taken from a Mahoningtown house that had been broken into Tuesday.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, police were contacted by a businessman who said Caravella had asked him to buy a large amount of gold and silver jewelry.

Officers said the victim identified all the jewelry as belonging to her, but said there was more was still missing.

The businessman told police he estimated the retail value of the jewelry at $4,000 and would have paid $900 if he had thought it was a legitimate transaction.
