Croton man faces gun charges

NEW CASTLE — A Croton man was jailed after an incident involving a gun.

New Castle police said Joseph R. Phillips, 19, of 735 Croton Ave., fought them as they arrested him.

According to reports, police received a call about a man flashing a gun in the area of Erie Street and Crawford Avenue around 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

They came across two men, one whose clothing matched the description given by the caller.

Police said they repeatedly ordered Phillips at gunpoint to put his hands up, but instead, he moved his hands toward his waistband numerous times.

An officer then told him to put his hands on the front of the cruiser and he complied. As police tried to arrest him, Phillips fought them and reached for a gun that was on his right side in his waistband, according to police.

Three officers struggled with Phillips, police said, and one of them used a Taser to subdue him. Phillips then allegedly kicked one of the officers in the crotch, according to police. Another officer removed the gun from Phillips’ waistband, then said.

The weapon had been reported stolen from a home in New Castle last year, according to police.

The caller who reported Phillips had a gun told police he had seen Phillips standing on a porch on Erie Street and had seen him put a small black pistol into his waistband.

The Taser prong was removed from Phillips at Jameson Hospital.

He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count each of receiving stolen property, firearms not to be carried without a license, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned by District Judge Jennifer L. Nicholson, who set his bond at $20,000. He remains in the Lawrence County jail.
