NEW CASTLE —
New Castle’s police department has received a grant from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation to add to its K-9 unit.
The $8,000 grant will be used to buy a dog, either trained or untrained, and a safety vest for the canine. If the dog requires training, the grant covers that cost.
Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback, announced the New Castle grant is one of eight distributed to police departments for their K-9 units in the Pittsburgh area.
Police Chief Bobby Salem said the department currently has three dogs. The additional dog will allow the department to have a K-9 on each of the department’s four shifts, he said.
He said that from apprehending suspects to locating dangerous drugs, the K-9 unit plays “an integral role” in the public safety services the department provides. The K-9 dogs and their handlers also conduct presentations for children and community organizations.
Since 2007, Roethlisberger’s foundation has awarded 107 grants totaling more than $950,000 to 102 police and fire departments and five community youth organizations, including Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Make A Wish Foundation.
