Groundbreaking set for Penn National in Austintown

NEW CASTLE — Penn National Gaming will break ground Thursday for its Hollywood Mahoning Valley Race Course.

The ceremony, at 1 p.m. will be at 700 N. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown.

The $125 million facility — expected to open next summer — will feature thoroughbred racing and 1,500 video display lottery terminals, similar to slot machines.

The Western Reserve Port Authority will provide $60 million in financing for the racetrack, stables, parking lots and buildings.

The project is expected to create 1,000 construction jobs and another 1,000 direct and indirect jobs once the facility is built, said Bob Tenenbaum, Penn National spokesman.

In addition to the facility, Pennsylvania-based Penn National will pay $75 million to relocate the racetrack from the Columbus area, and another $50 million for the license fee.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed “unprecedented” legislation yesterday to expand gun rights in his state. Good idea?

Yes. Expanding the scope of where people can carry guns can help halt violent crimes and make those places safer.
No. Carrying guns into bars and schools is NEVER a good idea. I think it will lead to more violence.
Not sure, but I don’t plan to visit Georgia any time soon.
