Planners recommend approval of recycling facility

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Planning Commission has recommended approval of a conditional use for a recycling facility on South Jefferson Street.

Upstate Shredding/Weitsman Recycling of Owego, N.Y., plans to construct three buildings on the site of Ferrotech Corp., 526 S. Jefferson St.

The company purchased Ferrotech at a bankruptcy auction in December.

The New York firm plans to demolish the existing buildings and construct a scrap metals building, a scale house/office building and a fluid recovery building.

Adam Weitsman, company owner, said in December that scrap metal will not be piled at the facility, rather the firm plans to ship it out the day it comes in.

The property is located in an M-2 heavy industrial district of the Eighth Ward.

Also this week, the planning commission recommended approval of a request by Steve Caldararo to combine three lots to allow for the addition to Nick’s Auto Body at 833 S. Mill St. The addition is planned for the rear of the building.

Both recommendations will go to city council, which will have the final say.
