NEW CASTLE — All of New Castle is proud of the Red Hurricane state championship basketball team.

Likely, though, no one is more so than Angela Dennis.

Dennis is the mother of Malik and Marquel Hooker, both members of the 31-0 squad that won both the WPIAL and PIAA titles. She’s also a cook at The Haven Convalescent Center, and wanted to introduce residents and staff to her sons.

“A lot of them would ask about him daily, and some wanted to meet him,” Dennis said. “Everybody here was cheering for him, and I think just about all the staff ended up going to Hershey.”

While Haven residents couldn’t go too, many nonetheless had photos of team members posted on their doors throughout the playoffs, and some — like Garnett Cook, Richard Clark, Sam Young, Bill Claypool and Cecil Suber — would do their best to keep up by radio and media reports.

Yesterday, all the residents wore red T-shirts that proclaimed “And Then There  Was One: Red Hurricane Basketball 2014 State Champs.”

After greeting and receiving congratulations from the residents, the ’Canes retired to an adjoining room and got busy autographing photos that were handed out to residents.
