NEW CASTLE — New Castle City Council approved the hiring of two part-time police officers.

Matthew William Kennedy and Martin Joseph Lepkowski Jr. were sworn in as officers at Thursday’s meeting after council’s approval.

Each will be paid $13 per hour with no benefits.

Police Chief Robert Salem said the two officers will eventually be assigned to city schools after they complete their field training.

Under an agreement reached with the New Castle Area School District last year, six officers were to be hired as a security measure at the schools. The district agreed to pay the city $20,000 for each officer for the year.

Salem said the city wasn’t able to fill the six positions initially and had to give another civil service test to get a new list of candidates.

With these hirings, the city has 36 full-time and 11 part-time officers, he said. The city is one part-time officer short, he noted.
