NEW CASTLE —
A state grant has been approved to aid water quality in streams in southwestern Lawrence County.
The Lawrence County Conservation District received the $733,245 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection through its Growing Greener program.
According to Becca Naber, a technician with the conservation district, the funds will be used for various projects on about a half-dozen farms in the Honey and Sugar Creek watersheds, in Little Beaver and North Beaver townships.
Naber noted these two streams are considered special protection watersheds by the state and they have higher water quality standards. The grant is intended to assist in protecting that level of quality.
Farms that will participate in the grant program agreed to do so up front, Naber said. They will be eligible for various investments that will assist with manure management, sedimentation and erosion control, and other projects designed to keep agricultural impurities out of the waterways.
The state’s Growing Greener program this week awarded $13.2 million in funds designed to aid in protecting the commonwealth’s watersheds. The grant to the conservation district was the only one designated for Lawrence County.
