NEW CASTLE — United Way of Lawrence County has raised $51,363 toward the renovation of the Cascade Park swimming pool.

Gayle Young, United Way executive director, reported the amount this week. The United Way has added the pool renovation project as a program to be funded through its annual campaign.

The agency has signed a lease agreement with the city of New Castle allowing it to make the renovations.

City council must approve the agreement, but members said this week they need clarification on some points. Council members have requested that United Way representatives meet with them at their April 22 work session.

The total cost of the project has yet to be determined, according to Chuck Jackson, project manager for the pool renovation.

“Until we get actual bids, we don’t know,” he said regarding the cost.

Once the city signs the agreement, the next step will be to get construction drawings, he explained. The United Way has enlisted the services of an engineer “who does nothing but pools,” Jackson said.

“Hopefully, we’ll have drawings by June.”

Jackson said the United Way wants to try to obtain grants and is trying to get as much in-kind services as possible for the project.

“We’ve been talking to different companies to help us out,” he said. “We’re getting community support, which is good.”
