PennDOT to seek bids for Route 224

NEW CASTLE — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will advertise for bids this month for improvements to Route 224 through New Castle.

Improvements will be made to the highway from Jefferson Street (Route 18) in the city to Wilson Drive in Union Township.

PennDOT expects to award contracts in April, with construction beginning in late May or June.

The work will include preservation to the bridge over the Shenango River and resurfacing of the highway.

PennDOT anticipates all the paving to be completed this year while the bridge work and overhead sign structures to be finished around April or May 2014.

Improvements to the bridge include substructure repairs and resurfacing.

The project will not require any detours, just single lane closures in the areas of construction, according to PennDOT.

When the project was announced in July, PennDOT said it had planned to detour traffic onto Grant Street between Jefferson Street and Sampson Street.

Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo objected to a detour, saying he was concerned not only about the volume of traffic on Grant Street, but also the heavy trucks.

Mastrangelo said Wednesday he had not been informed of the change by PennDOT, but commented, “I’m glad they’re doing that.”
