Recycling facility’s plan recommended for approval

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Planning Commission has recommended approval of a land development plan for a recycling facility.

Ben Weitsman and Sons of New Castle plans to construct a facility at 526 S. Jefferson St. to recycle scrap metal. The site is the former Ferrotech Corp. property, which is in an M-2 heavy industrial district.

The planning commission’s recommendation this week goes to city council. Council previously approved conditional uses for the company to construct the facility, which includes a scrap metals building, a scale house/office building, a fluid recovery building and a shredder.

The company plans to begin construction in April.

The commission recommended approval of a conditional use for Joan Welsh/Verizon Wireless for an antenna at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

The request of William Zeiger for a subdivision to consolidate six lots into three parcels in the area of 510 Reis St. and 218 E. Boyles Ave. was recommended for approval.

Because it was the commission’s annual meeting, officers were elected as follows:

Chris Miller, chairman; David Esposito, vice chairman; Frank Ross, secretary; Steve Farris, treasurer; and Carmen Rozzi, assistant secretary-treasurer.
