NEW CASTLE —
The new Mill Street Bridge is nearing completion and a grand opening is being considered for next month.
Bill Humphrey of Frank B. Taylor Engineering, the design engineers, said Tuesday the bridge will be available for runners to use in the annual Thanksgiving 5-K race downtown.
“It will be closed to all cars and open to runners only,” he emphasized, adding the contractors will do the work they need to do and put up barrels to allow the runners to cross the bridge. But he stressed it is still not ready for traffic.
The contractors’ deadline to finish is Dec. 30, but if it can finish up the details that are left, weather permitting, the bridge could be open to traffic during the second week of December, Humphrey said.
“We need some nice weather for them to be able to finish it.”
On Tuesday, the Lawrence County commissioners discussed contacting Taylor Engineering with the intention of planning a grand opening ceremony at the bridge when it opens. No date has been set, pending the completion.
