Union to vote on sewer sale

NEW CASTLE — Union Township supervisors will decide Wednesday whether to sell the township sanitary sewer system.

They have set a special meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Union Township Municipal Building to vote on selling the system to the New Castle Sanitation Authority.

A public meeting to get residents’ input on the proposed sale took place in December. At that time, supervisors said they were undecided about the matter. No sale price has been announced. Supervisors said they were waiting for evaluation of the system’s value before making a decision.

If it sells the system, Union Township would get a lump sum payment and be relieved of any future responsibility for maintenance, repair or extensions.

However three full-time jobs in the sewer department are at stake, although those jobs could be addressed in a negotiated sales agreement, officials said.
