Zoning board OKs restaurant expansion

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Zoning Hearing Board of Appeals has granted approval for The Cedars to expand.

The panel granted the appeal of Edward J. Pagley to extend a nonconforming use for construction of an addition to the East Side restaurant at 827 Addis St. to provide additional seating.

Pagley had received approval in 2012 to construct an addition that is 16 feet by 24 feet, but he never obtained a building permit. This week’s approval changes the addition to 20 feet by 24 feet.

The city planning commission this week recommended approval of a land development plan for the Cedars construction. The recommendation goes to city council, which has the final say.

Zoning board decisions are not subject to consideration by council.

The zoning board also approved an appeal of Ron Wilkinson to continue the use of property at 324 Norwood Ave. and 1617 Highland Ave. as triplexes. The triplexes, which occupy a corner lot, have been used as duplexes with one vacancy apiece for more than a year.
