Tornado touches down in East Lackawannock

SHARON — A tornado touched down Tuesday afternoon in East Lackawannock Township, the National Weather Service confirmed.

No injuries were reported.

Frank Jannetti, Mercer County’s director of public safety, said the tornado was spun from a storm that had struck the greater region. The twister took a fairly straight path between Orchard Road west of Route 318 to North Stone Base Road just west of Mercer.

Two barns were severely damaged in that area, along with numerous downed trees and power lines. Winds from the tornado were estimated above 90 mph, according to the weather Service.

Straight-line winds hammered the Jackson Center area with those winds estimated between 78 and 83 mph.

A garage owned by Vincent United Methodist Church on Walnut Street was severely damaged in the borough, along with a porch roof on a home.

Other damage included roof shingles blown away on various houses, along with downed trees and power lines, Jannetti said.

While both areas were hard hit, he added, there wasn’t enough damage to warrant an emergency disaster declaration.
