NEW CASTLE — New Castle Fire Chief Tom Maciarello is retiring from the department.

Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo said yesterday that Maciarello’s retirement date is Sept. 1.

Maciarello had knee surgery last week and is on sick leave, the mayor said.

In the interim, Mastrangelo said he has named assistant chief Mark Panella as acting chief.

Mastrangelo said he plans to recommend someone to fill the position on a permanent basis to council at its August meeting. Council must confirm the mayor’s department head appointments.

Maciarello has been with the department for nearly 44 years, beginning his service in October 1969, according to city records. Mastrangelo named him chief in January 2008.
