Plans are in the works for construction of the county’s third boat launch on a local waterway.
Amy McKinney, Lawrence County planning director, updated the commissioners Tuesday on the progress of a launch planned for the Nashua Bridge area in Pulaski Township. The site will provide boat access to the Shenango River.
McKinney said she has secured quotes from two engineering companies to do the design work. The work also will include surveys, a site plan, and erosion and sedimentation control and stormwater management plans.
The commissioners plan to vote Tuesday on approving the lower of the two quotes, $8,250, which was submitted by RAR Engineering.
According to McKinney, the boat launches, included in the county’s Greenways plan, are to provide access to local rivers for recreational use such as canoeing, kayaking and fishing, but they also provide access for river rescue.
Most the launches also have access to fish from them as well, she said.
The county recently completed the Millennium Boat Launch with access to the Shenango River from the Harbor and King’s Chapel Road area of Neshannock Township.
McKinney explained that once the required permits are secured from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Nashua project will be advertised for construction bids.
She anticipates that may be in late spring.
“We want to build it this year,” she said.
Commissioner Dan Vogler urged McKinney to make the township supervisors aware of the progress. McKinney said the supervisors have been informed and the Pulaski Township Volunteer Fire Department is excited about the proposal, because it gives them access to the water.
Fire Chief Guy Morse said the added access will present another source for the department can pull water for fighting fires.
“We need to be able to go into large bodies of water to be able to draft water to tankers to supply water ...,” he said and noted it also will be a plus for water rescue efforts.
“It could be a disembarking point for boats.”
The county also built the Bevington Boat Launch in Wayne Township to give access to the Beaver River.
