NEW CASTLE —
A New Castle man faces drug, gun and other charges after police allege he ran from them.
Shenango Township police charged Roy Gene Zook, 33, of 3062 McClelland Ave. with multiple counts as the result of an incident on New Butler Road.
According to a criminal complaint filed Friday, the incident began early Oct. 5 when officers followed a vehicle that had failed to stop at a stop sign at Cascade and East Washington streets. Police followed the vehicle to a motel on New Butler Road where the cruiser’s lights were activated and the driver was ordered out of his vehicle.
However, according to officers, the driver took off into a nearby wooded area. The suspect, Zook, was located and taken into custody.
A search of the suspect found $2,253, while darkness prevented a search of the area where Zook had been arrested. At the Shenango station, Zook waived his Miranda rights and talked with officers. He allegedly told them some of the money was from selling marijuana. He also admitted to throwing 10 pills into the woods while running from police.
When asked, Zook denied having a gun. A search of the vehicle he was driving turned up no contraband, and Zook was released to the custody of a relative.
However, after daylight, police from Shenango and New Castle, with the assist of a police dog, searched the wooded area. There, they discovered a .32-caliber semiautomatic that police said had been there only a short time. Officers noted Zook has a prior criminal record that prohibits him from having a weapon.
Zook was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing police, driving without a license and a stop sign violation.
