NEW CASTLE — The Neshannock Township Volunteer Fire Department is upgrading its equipment.

The department expects to purchase a 1998 Seagrave rescue vehicle for $250,000 from the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department in Fayette County.

The truck has about 16,000 miles on it, said supervisor Steve Demofonte, a fire department member.

“This is a bargain,” he said. “These things are $795,000 brand new.”

He added this type of rescue truck “can last 30 or 40 years.”

To assist the department in the purchase, the supervisors agreed to transfer $217,000 from the fire capital improvement fund toward the purchase. The fire department will pay the balance.

Demofonte said the department anticipates selling an older rescue truck and an engine with a nozzle and ladder.

“There has been interest from another fire department,” he said.
