Cancer society grant to aid Amish women

NEW CASTLE — Amish women in Mercer and Lawrence counties will benefit from an American Cancer Society grant.

Primary Health Network will use the Making Strides Early Detection and Quality of Life Grant to educate them about the importance of breast cancer screenings.

The $5,000, awarded last month by the American Cancer Society, will be used to provide outreach to the women of the Amish communities in the two counties. While Primary Health Network visits the New Wilmington Amish community and does general medical care outreach, this funding provides the resources to add a focused breast cancer component to the outreach program as well as expanding to new locations.

The added effort will help to ensure Amish women are educated about screening importance, scheduled to receive mammograms and receive free transportation to and from their treatment/screening appointments.
