Witches night out a macabre scene

NEW CASTLE — Dozens of pointy black hats lined the streets of Volant at eventide Saturday for the annual Witches Night Out.

The event, sponsored by the Volant merchants, included costume judging, a witch trial and a witch’s ball with music and dancing.

The crisp fall air set the background for the event, and the smell of pumpkin and spice candles permeated the village.

A fortune-teller read tea leaves to predict the events of those who dared to look into the future.

The main street was lit with luminaria inside bags with witches silhouetted on the sides.

The shop owners also were dressed up and offered various treats — including candy, cookies, cake pops, vegetables and dip, cheesecake treats, cider and punch — to visitors.

Some people dressed their cats and dogs, and witches and warlocks of all ages participated in the event, which attracted people from the surrounding area, including Ohio.

The attire of the evening included elaborate witch hats decorated with lace, spider webs, feathers and glitter; gigantic spiders; long, colored fake fingernails; brightly colored striped stockings; buckled shoes; metal medallions; wigs of long green or purple hair; misshapen green noses with warts on them; broomsticks and the strong scent of patchouli oil.

This was the fourth year for Witches Night Out, typically held the last Saturday of September to set the mood for the month of Halloween.
