NEW CASTLE —
The New Castle Community YMCA has received $1 million for capital improvements.
The matching grant comes courtesy of the May Emma Hoyt Foundation.
“The Hoyt Foundation’s commitment and generosity to this community and our local YMCA is truly incredible,” said Jay Bruce, YMCA board president. “The pledge they have made will help Lawrence County youth, families and community members for years to come.
“We are extremely excited to have the Hoyt Foundation’s support for our capital campaign.”
William Lutz, chief executive officer of the Y, noted that the downtown facility was constructed in 1954, and that planned improvements “will enable the YMCA to maintain its significant presence downtown and will greatly improve our growing membership’s experience.”
The project includes a complete renovation of the boys’, girls’, men’s and women’s locker rooms, the addition of three family locker rooms, expansion of the youth center, a new drop-in child watch center for parents and caregivers using the Y, new wellness and free weight equipment, new exterior windows and a new elevator.
“Our mission is to put Christian principles into practice by providing youth, adult and family programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all,” Lutz said. “That is exactly what our board and staff team are committed to doing every day. Our focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility help us change lives and strengthen our community.”
The Y, which has been in downtown New Castle for more than 145 years, strives to make its facilities open to all, regardless of age, income or background. Of its 6,200 members, more than 1,900 youth, adults and families receive financial assistance for memberships and programs.
The Y will begin its “Strengthening the Heart of Our Community” capital campaign in January to raise the funds needed to complete the project. The first stage of the $2.4 million campaign will be to raise $2 million for the improvements. The campaign will run through June 2014.
