NEW CASTLE —
The New Castle Fire Pension Board has approved the retirement of three firefighters.
Chief Thomas Maciarello and Lts. John Onufrak and Robert Duncan will be retiring from the department effective Sept. 1.
Duncan is taking a disability retirement.
Councilman William Panella voted no on Tuesday, saying he wanted more information about the disability from the doctor.
Maciarello has been with the department 44 years while Onufrak and Duncan have served 25 years, according to city personnel records.
Maciarello had knee surgery in July and is currently on sick leave. Mark Panella has been named acting chief.
Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo said the city plans to fill the vacant positions. The city’s budget calls for 25 firefighter positions.
The pension board is made up of the mayor, five council members and the fire chief.
