Franklin “Sam” McCullough of 125 North St. passed away peacefully at 6:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was 84.
He was born on April 22, 1925, in New Castle, a son of Sankey and Cecelia Coyne McCullough.
A crane operator, he worked 10 years for Aurora Span Crete.
An outdoorsman, he was an avid hunter and he enjoyed fishing.
He enjoyed weightlifting, and throughout his life he remained very health conscious.
He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II. He was honorably discharged Aug. 11, 1945, with the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon, a Distinguished Unit Badge with a Bronze Arrowhead, one Bronze Service Star, Purple Heart, which he received June 24, 1944, and the World War II victory medal.
He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Ann Stephens of Ravenna, Ohio; three sons, Franklin “Sam” McCullough III of Ravenna, Daniel Lee McCullough and his companion Tammy Harless, of Akron, Ohio, and Shawn Patrick McCullough of Kent, Ohio; one sister, Mary Grimes of New Castle; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Mabel McCullough of Norfolk, Va., and James and Dorothy McCullough of New Castle; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack McCullough.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Dr. David Ballert, associate pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Ravenna, Ohio, officiating. The New Castle Area Veterans Honor Guard will provide full military honors at the beginning of the funeral service.
