New Castle takes 15 firsts in science contest

NEW CASTLE — New Castle school district students outshine many other schools in Pennsylvania when it comes to science knowledge.

They proved that last week by sweeping 15 first-place awards at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition at Penn State University.

New Castle held the record again this year for having the greatest number of qualified students competing from one school district.

The district had 44 high school students entered in the contest, which involves a student designing an independent science project, forming a hypothesis, collecting data, analyzing results and drawing a conclusion.

First-place winners were: Jared Budai, Maria Cade, Deanna Dailey, Carly DiPietro, Kyrstyn Donofrio, Jaidyn Eggleston, Levi Green, Annalynn Lalama, Rachel McNickle, Cody Papa, Joey Pauletich, Concetta Pounds, Dana Rhodes, Francis Shon and Mark Torsello.

New Castle students who placed second were: Caitlin Adamo, Karyn Annarumo, Eva Ashbaugh, Haley Beckman, Devynne Booker, Marissa Butera, Araycia Byers, Nick Conti, Grace Currie, Natalie DeVincentis, Shelby Dudash, Jmya Eggleston, Jordyn Essinger, Hunter Ferchaw, Andrew Gonzales, Kordell Hawkins, Alexandra Hunkele, Ashley Kohnen, Cassandra Maas, John Maas, Domenic Morell, Michaelyn Norco, Michelle Pfahles, Isabella Rapone, Kiara Recchione, Alexa Reider and Alexis Wesner.

Taylor Heasley and Jerianne Zona placed third.

The New Castle teacher sponsors were Bill Bradley, Susan Harlan, Chadd Quimby, Suzette Senchak and Leah Ann Williams.

Each student competing on the state level had presented his or her specific project to a panel of adult judges at a regional competition in February.

The winners then advanced to the state contest, competing against the best 3,000 science students in Pennsylvania.

A panel of graduate science students and professors were the judges.

The participants represent nearly 650 public, private and home-schools in the state.
