NEW CASTLE —
At its regular meeting last week, the New Castle Area School Board:
•Set a budget planning meeting for 6 p.m. March 26 in the board meeting room. The findings of the district’s 2008-09 and 2009-10 audits also will be discussed at that meeting.
•Accepted the retirement of Janet Palimino, first-grade teacher at Thaddeus Stevens School, effective June 7.
•Granted family leaves of absence to Karmin Dando, vocal music teacher at George Washington Intermediate School, effective May 20 through June 7; Jenna Mozzocio, grade school teacher at Thaddeus Stevens, up to 12 weeks beginnin Feb. 19; Carrie Popovich, John F. Kennedy life skills teacher, from May 6 through the end of the first semester of 2013-14; and Joni Cepro-Hudach, cafeteria worker, retroactive to March 1 and on an intermittent basis.
•Granted Jacqueline Taylor, a George Washington cafeteria worker, an unpaid leave of absence retroactive to March 4, through the rest of the school year.
•Granted a rate increase of $1,000 for the athletic director position for this school year and agreed that future increases be the same as the annual incrases for supplemental contracts in athletics under the teachers bargaining agreement.
•Hired Linda Haas of Graceland Road as a full-time substitute teacher in speech and language.
•Accepted the retirement of Pete Squillo, custodian at Croton Pre-K Center, effective June 28.
•Approved the 2013-14 school calendar. The first day of school will be Aug. 22 and the last day of school will be June 5, 2014.
•Approved the establishment of the New Castle Floor Hockey Club as a new student activity with the adviser acting in a volunteer capacity.
•Approved Lawrence County Community Action Partnership staff and interns to help with the Fit4Life project, a physical education program being undertaken with a grant. They are: Nancy Welker, Janeen Mancino, JaVon Clark, Kaitlyn Schmidt, Erica Szefczek, Margaret Box and Jordan Steel.
•Added substitutes Staci Morrison and Cindy Sluder as elementary teachers, Cherisa Vigne for library science, Emily Daley for music and John Beshero and Maureen Russell as Intermediate Unit IV emergency teachers.
•Hired Beth DeFrank and Carla Anderson as bus monitors.
•Agreed to trade in unusued percussion instruments to Volkwein’s Music in Pittsburgh for store credits. The amount offered by Volkwein is $1,370.
•Approved the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV budget for the 2013-14 school year.
•Gave permission to New Castle police chief Bobby Salem to use the high school cafeteria for a North Hill Neighborhood Watch meeting March 28.
•Gave permission for use of the high school lobby, cafeteria and some classrooms April 6 for the Lawrence County Women’s Conference.
•Gave permission to the Rev. Michael Spicuzza of Third Presbyterian Church to use the George Washington auditorium for a church service for five local congregations from 8 a.m. to noon May 19.
