PITTSBURGH —
New Castle dialed up some long-distance service Saturday night.
The calls proved to be golden.
The Red Hurricane rode its 3-point shooting to its second-straight WPIAL title in a 68-53 over Hampton at Duquesne University’s A.J. Palumbo Center.
New Castle (26-0) beat the Talbots for last year’s Class AAA championship. This year’s title came in Class AAAA. It marked the first time a WPIAL team captured two-straight undefeated district championships. Also, it’s the first time a District 7 champion has repeated after moving up a classification.
The ’Canes drained 12 3-pointers in the contest. The team hit five in the pivotal second quarter. Anthony Richards swished three in a row from downtown as New Castle stormed to a 36-22 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, Antonio Rudolph connected for a pair of treys, while Malik Hooker delivered a long-distance dagger late in the frame as the ’Canes extended their lead to 52-32.
