  • money.jpg New Castle district gives early budget highlights

    Balancing of the New Castle Area School District’s 2012-13 budget will not require a property tax increase.
    The school board has called a special meeting for 6 p.m. Tuesday to introduce its spending plan totaling $40,538,389 for next school year. That represents a 3.7 percent or $1,461,942 increase from this year’s budget.

    The New Castle Area School Board has ratified a four-year contract for the district’s 60-member support staff. Support staff personnel include personal care assistants who help students having mental and physical handicaps, a behavioral intervention aide and a program assistant.

  • School district honors students, workers

    Seven students and two employees are recipients of the New Castle school district’s Pride and Promise awards. The school board presented certificates and T-shirts to the recipients at its meeting Wednesday night.

    Jason Rankin has coached his last girls basketball game at New Castle High School. Rankin has submitted his resignation to New Castle Superintendent George Gabriel. He is expected to be named boys basketball coach at Sharon High tonight.

    Victoria Evans and Ciara Hovis are the winners of the Lawrence County Bar Association’s 2012 Law Day Essay Contest. Evans, of New Castle High School, and Hovis, of Laurel High School, were chosen based on their winning essays about whether the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is Constitutional.

    Joe Cowart is living the dream. Cowart, whose wife, Meghan, gave birth to the couple’s first son Wednesday night, was named the new head coach of the New Castle High football team last night at a special meeting of the New Castle Area School Board. Cowart was chosen by a 5-3 vote. Board member Marilyn Berkley did not attend the meeting.

    The New Castle High football team has its new coach. Joe Cowart was named the Red Hurricane’s coach Thursday night at a special meeting of the New Castle Area School Board. Cowart was chosen by a 5-3 vote. Board member Marilyn Berkley did not attend the meeting. The choice didn’t come without plenty of controversy.

    One of eight men will be introduced as the football coach at New Castle High tomorrow night. The battle for the job to replace Frank Bongivengo Jr. as coach appears to have come down to two candidates — Joe Cowart and Bruce Clark.

    Mendall Altman dropped out of New Castle High School. He had no other choice. The Great Depression ended about seven years before he became a sophomore at New Castle, and times were tough for most of America — and they were even worse for someone with 13 siblings.
