Tim Kolodziej: We were watching, 'Canes, and we’re so glad we did

NEW CASTLE — We were watching.

Thousands of us.

Every Tuesday and Friday.

Then every Wednesday and Saturday.

Every game, every play.

We cheered.

We fretted.

We cursed.

We turned away when it became a little too intense to look.

But mostly, we were watching.

We couldn’t help it.

“I’ve been around a long time, and I was unbelievably impressed by New Castle. We were watching them on film and we were in complete awe of their unity and their skills.”

We were watching.

Young.

Old.

And everyone in-between.

Those who really understood what they were witnessing.

And those who didn’t.

We all enjoyed a ride quite like no other.

That’s what happens when a leader casts a vision.

That’s what happens when your seniors, and your stars, “buy in” and keep their teammates accountable.

That’s what happens when a group of individuals comes together as one.

That’s what happens when they come together for a purpose greater than themselves.

Amazing happens.

That’s what.

“They brought a town alive. It’s really not what they did for themselves or the coaching staff or the school. They brought a town alive.”

We were watching.

Especially New Castle High graduates. I love what my friend Jon Geramita posted Tuesday night on Facebook following the ’Canes’ loss to Lower Merion.

I asked him if I could reprint it in this space.

“Just as the 1982 team inspired a city, that team inspired members of the 1993 team. The 1993 team with (John) Sarandrea as the new coach and a new style made it officially cool to be a basketball player in New Castle.

“And that 1993 team directly influenced a bunch of sixth-graders, who would eventually make up that great 1997-99 team, who directly influenced the 2002 state Final Four team.

“And now, as a product of 30 years of great basketball, great people and one hell of a city, the 2013 team again showed what makes New Castle a great place.

“And somewhere, there are a bunch of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders who fell in love with basketball this year directly because of this group of young men — an achievement probably a lot greater than winning a state championship

“We R NC!”

Yes we are, Jon.

Thank you for the eloquent reminder.
