Board bids outgoing members adieu

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle school board has bid farewell to three outgoing members.

Mary Ann Tofel, Allan Joseph and Anna Pascarella were recognized by the board and administration Wednesday during their last regular meeting.

The board will convene for its reorganization meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 3, when it will elect a new board president. New members George J. Gabriel, Mark Panella and Steve Fornataro, who were elected Nov. 5, will take their seats that night.

Dr. Marilyn K. Berkely was elected to another four-year term.

Each outgoing member received New Castle Area School District logo shirts to recognize their years of service.

Joseph has served the longest of the three.

“I want to thank the community of West Pittsburg and the city of New Castle for allowing me to be here for 16 years,” he said. “I felt I always had the kids’ best interest at heart.”

During his tenure, he has seen the construction of the new junior-senior high school, “and our facility is second to none,” he said.

The district also is getting a new early learning center, “which I supported from beginning to end.”

“It has been an interesting four years,” commented Pascarella, who has been on the board for nine years. “During this time I’ve learned so much about the district and politics.”

Tofel, who spent six years on the board, also spent 35 years as a teacher. She wished good luck to all the incoming board members, adding, “Hopefully they will all work as a team.”

As Pennsylvania’s tax revenues from casinos plateau, some are saying Internet gambling should be legalized in the state. Do you agree?

Yes. If people are willing to spend money, I’m all for our state collecting additional taxes.
No. We’re already seeing casino tax revenue dropping. This would just saturate the market even further.
